Activated carbon is only needed for planting with soil. In this case, only high-quality soil should be used and the coal mixed with it. Below this mixture, expanded clay is added to the Airy as a drainage layer so that the earth is not directly in the water tank.
The function and main effect of activated carbon is that its incredibly large surface provides the ideal breeding ground for microorganisms. In interaction with the plant's own enzymes, the microorganisms are responsible for converting the pollutants into nutrients. Therefore, it is good to be able to settle as many of them as possible in the root system. And the activated carbon makes sure of that. It hardly plays a role in air purification itself.
The package enclosed with the AIRY pot weighs about 50 grams. It is made of bamboo and has no influence on the pH value of the earth.
If there is a contamination of the pot by the charcoal, this can be easily removed with benzine.
The activated carbon does not have to be replaced and can be bought in many places - we therefore do not stock it in our shop.
If a new planting of an Airy system occurs, we recommend the use of our mineral substrate "AIRY base". It contains a rock called zeolite, which has the same function as activated carbon and makes far less dirt. The lowest drainage layer, consisting of expanded clay, is also omitted when planting in substrate.
Activated carbon is only included with the AIRY pot. The newer Airy systems (box, S, M, L) already include the Airy base.
